EPIC — Environment and People Impact Calculator

EPIC measures the social value of capital projects at the two points it matters: beforehand, as a forecast that makes the case for funding at the point of tender, and after completion, as a record of what was actually delivered.

Developed by Down to Earth through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership with Cardiff Business School, EPIC assesses the outcomes conventional construction frameworks tend to leave out — community connection, skills and long-term wellbeing, indoor air quality, energy costs in use, biodiversity, and the local economic footprint of the supply chain. These sit alongside the measures you would expect: operational and embodied carbon, water, and waste.

The toolkit returns a score across three domains — People, Built Environment and Natural Environment — a monetised social value figure with an SROI ratio, and a report suitable for a funding application, business case or tender return.

Scores are withheld until every applicable measure has been answered, and the evidence basis for each scored measure is published inside the tool. The method is academically grounded and the scoring is open to inspection.

EPIC is built for local authorities, VCSE organisations, SMEs and public bodies evaluating the long-term value of what they commission and build. To find out more, call 01792 232439 or email kate@dte.org.uk
