Retrofit project: Treherbert Education Centre
Project Details
RIBA Stage: 0-2
Project Cost: £2.3M
We are excited to work with Black Mountains College transform a former school and Youth Centre into the new Treherbert Education Centre.
Black Mountain College’s vision is ” for the new education centre is to provide accessible learning and training opportunities, particularly focused on sustainability, land skills and local job creation”
Based on a deep retrofit of the old Treherbert Primary School using sustainable materials, the Treherbert Education Centre will become a new community learning resource for BMC to base their programmes from.
The project has involved a remodel of the existing spaces so that it can best suit the teaching and student needs of Black Mountains College while also looking at a strategy for making the building a more energy efficient space.
We’re also looking at how the retrofit can be offered as a learning opportunity to the students – embedding applied learning in their programmes.
The challenge of adapting the Victorian school spaces into adaptable, sustainable and interesting spaces has been an intriguing one, and we are excited to continue our partnership with BMC for the future phases of this project.
