Building Sustainable Communities

Down to Earth is excited to be part of Our Bright Future, a forward-thinking social movement that supports young people to lead progressive change in their communities and local environment. Our project ‘Building Sustainable Communities’ is one of 31 programmes that are aiming to bring about positive change to young people’s lives over the next five years.

What is this project about?

‘Building Sustainable Communities’ is a 5 year programme which provides remarkable opportunities for young people to develop both themselves and their local communities/environment through sustainable construction and green entrepreneur training programmes. In years 1 & 2, participants will help to build a traditional timber-framed barn, a round pole-reciprocal roof training centre and a new residential centre. Young people will then be supported to design and ultimately build their own sustainable buildings in Years 3-5.

Who is this project for?

‘Building Sustainable Communities’ is for groups of 8 – 12 young people (17-24 years old) from referral agencies. If your group is older, this project might be for you.

When?

We will be running group programmes throughout 2020

Groups will attend 1 day a week for 8 weeks. We’ll be running a group every weekday so we should cover most schedules. We won’t run sessions over school holidays.

Times:

  • 10:30 – 14:30.

Where?

You’ll be based at one of our two sites on Gower, either Murton, or Little Bryn Gwyn. All of the buildings and infrastructure at these locations have been built by our group members such as yourself. You can find directions, contact details & maps here.

What do you need?

  • You need to be able to get to us. Buses do run but the service is infrequent, and you’ll have to walk for about 20 minutes.  Minibus, taxi, or car-sharing are probably the favourite options.
  • A packed lunch. Don’t forget sandwiches, we’ll provide the tea and biscuits!
  • The group need to wear clothing that they can move comfortably in, don’t mind getting dirty, and is suitable for British weather! We have plenty of waterproofs that group members can use.

Who is funding this project?

Our Bright Future is a forward-thinking social movement that supports young people to lead progressive change in their communities and local environment. Our Bright Future helps young people step up and take what is rightfully theirs: a healthy planet, a thriving economy, a brighter future.
